Thailand Phil launches its 20th season of masterworks in celebratory style! Maestro Carl St.Clair takes the podium to lead Berlioz’s Symphony fantastique, a vivid and groundbreaking orchestral work that tells the hallucinatory story of unrequited love, obsession, and despair. Virtuoso piano soloist Nareh Arghamanyan returns to our stage to perform Rachmaninoff’s exquisitely expressive Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

We are delighted to welcome back one of our favorite maestros, Ligia Amadio, to the podium. As one of today’s most celebrated and award-winning female conductors, Ligia leads the Thailand Phil in Sibelius’ haunting Violin Concerto, featuring rising star Elvin Ganiyev as the soloist, followed by the exhilarating power of Tchaikovsky’s fateful Symphony No. 4. The program opens with Jennifer Higdon’s vibrant SkyLine, a musical portrayal of a bustling urban landscape.

Luminaries

 

An Afternoon of Illuminating Music

 

The history of music is shaped by a lineage of legendary composers, each lighting the way for those who follow. This program begins with a work by one of the greatest, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose Serenata Notturna—likely composed to entertain guests at an evening gathering in Vienna—exudes charm and elegance. The influence of Mozart can be traced through Beethoven to Brahms, whose First Symphony is sometimes dubbed “Beethoven’s Tenth” because of Beethoven’s profound influence. Rounding out the program is Narong Prangcharoen’s Luminary: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, a contemporary work of vibrant energy. Join the Thailand Phil for a program of illuminating music, masterfully conducted by the illustrious Carl St.Clair.

British Legends

 

An All-British Lineup Including Elgar’s Famous Enigma

 

Few mysteries in classical music are as enduringly perplexing as the origin of the "Enigma" theme in Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Elgar himself described the theme as a “dark saying” meant to remain “unguessed.” More than 120 years later, audiences, musicians, and scholars continue to puzzle over this musical riddle, with no definitive answer in sight. On the first half of the program legendary British euphonium soloist David Childs takes the stage for the Asian premiere of Sir James MacMillan’s Euphonium Concerto. British conductor Jason Lai leads the Thailand Philharmonic in this all-British program.

A Unique Mix of EDM, Jazz Fusion, and Rachmaninoff

 

Electronic Dance Music and symphony orchestras rarely intersect, but that’s exactly what happens when the Thailand Phil takes the stage to perform Mothership. Following this electrifying opener, the orchestra’s own bass-trombonist, Thamapoom Sriewiset, will perform the Grammy-nominated subZERO Concerto, a dynamic fusion of classical, world music, and jazz. The program concludes with the lush and passionate melodies of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2.

Mahler’s Finale

 

The Moving Conclusion of Our 20th Season

 

Gustav Mahler composed his Ninth Symphony during a somber period toward the end of his life. Just a few years earlier, he had tragically lost his four-year-old daughter to scarlet fever, and he was soon after diagnosed with the heart condition that would ultimately claim his life. Mahler was also acutely aware that the great symphonic composers before him—Beethoven, Schubert, and Bruckner—had not lived to complete more than nine symphonies. Although he began work on a Tenth Symphony, the Ninth became the last he finished, and is often regarded as Mahler’s farewell symphony. Join Thailand Phil, under the leadership of Maestro St.Clair, for this poignant finale to our 20th season.
