Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC) 2019
Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC) is a jazz music event initiated in 2009 by Mahidol University College of Music, aimed at presenting top quality jazz music to the public and also offering jazz education to the interested musicians (both students and general publics). To achieve our aim, TIJC is held in the university venue and consists of three main elements, i.e., music performance, Jazz Education Activities (workshop / masterclass during the daytime), and Jazz Solo Competition, which are opened both for general professional jazz musicians (open division) and students (junior division).

In addition to the existing elements, an educational event “TIJC Jazz Camp” was initiated in 2013, offering all participants great chances to meet, perform with, and learn from the world-class masters.

TIJC 2019 will be held from 25-27 January 2019, Friday- Sunday, while TIJC Jazz Camp will be from 21-23 January 2019, Monday- Wednesday, resulting in a full week of Jazz education and performance which last from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 January, 2019.

The music activities during the TIJC Jazz week include;

  • TIJC Performance Series
Well known for bringing in superb-quality jazz music, TIJC will, again, feature the greatest jazz musicians of our time from all over the world.
  • TIJC Education Series
Following the successful TIJC 2009 - TIJC 2018, it's time to get inspired and get your knowledge tank fulfilled once again!!!
  • TIJC Solo Competition
TIJC solo competition is a jazz improvisation competition with reliable and comprehensible performance regulations using internationally recognized adjudicators.

  • TIJC Jazz Camp
In TIJC Jazz Camp, which will be held during January 21-23, 2019, the participant will find out all you need to know to progress his/her Jazz skills far forward . Established in 2013, this year’s camp will give participants the chance to meet, learn and perform with world-class masters including trumpetist Alex Sipiagin, double bassist Scott Colley, drummer Ari Hoenig, guitarist David Gilmore, and pianist John Escreet. The programme consists of a variety of Jazz topics, instrumental masterclasses in techniques, composition and artist development.

Alex Sipiagin Quintet

With trumpetist Alex Sipiagin, double bassist Scott Colley, drummer Ari Hoenig, guitarist David Gilmore, and pianist John Escreet.

"Alex Sipiagin is an amazing musician — truly a multifaceted composer, arranger, producer, a wonderful lead trumpet player, and most of all, a completely original trumpet and flugelhorn soloist.” Trumpet icon Randy Brecker

Born and raised in Russia, Alex Sipiagin moved to New York City in 1990 after winning top honors in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Louis Armstrong Competition. He has since performed with such top artists as Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, Dr. John, Eric Clapton, and several of the Mingus bands. Sipiagin is an expert instrumentalist and a renowned composer and group leader. His album Balance 38-58 was ranked as a Top Album of 2015 by DownBeat magazine. Tonight’s ace band includes John Escreet and Matt Brewer – both featured on Balance 38-58 – as well as Seamus Blake and Donald Edwards, two top contemporary names in jazz. Sipiagin has regularly wowed audiences as a sideman at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and tonight marks his anticipated debut as a leader.

Omer Avital Quintet

Since forming in 2016, the improvisations they created around Avital’s compositions jelled in an immediate and uncanny way, as if the musicians were traveling along the same tightrope, aloft and daring, with an incredible solidarity held together by a bond that went far beyond performing the notes and letting go in the solos. That bond seems to have been formed from their individual careers criss-crossing so many times since leaving Israel. Indeed, all are Israeli expatriates, all living in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, all then hanging out at Omer’s sharing dinner and Turkish coffee. There is a friendship these musicians enjoy which definitely penetrates the performances. This shared history, even though years apart, imbued this quintet with the key to Avital’s music: his ability to bring the various rhythmic and harmonic vocabularies underpinning 20th and 21st century hardcore jazz expression to flow with a polyphonic attitude and musical multilingualism.

 Omer Avital : Bass
Asaf Yuria : Tenor Saxohone & Sopran
 Alexander Levin : Tenor Saxohone
Eden Ladin : Piano & Keys
 Ofri Nehemya : Drums

TRIONAUTS

In the constellation of the jazz trio TRIONAUTS, Emanuel Hauptmann (dr.), Tino Derado (p.) and Björn Werra (bass), the influences and inspiration of their different backgrounds are clearly reflected. Already with the creation of the first CD / DOWN TO EARTH Tino and Emanuel are mainly responsible not only as founders but also as composers for the design of sound and music.

This is also the case with the new project "Delicate Dance" (CD release 2019). Each of these musicians is bandleader of own formations, lecturer, plays and works beyond that in firm as well as free occupations of well-known artists such as; Rolf Kühn, Katharina Thalbach, Blofish, Berlin Metropol-Orchestra, Ensemble Mosaik, Sido, NDR-Big Band, Till Brönner, Gary Burton, Randy Brecker and others.

The sound stretches across almost every genre of music, from jazz, pop, funk, film and theater music to contemporary classical music. Furthermore, TRIONAUTS invites again and again a variety of soloists to enrich their music and expand (eg: Pat Appleton (voc.) / Rick Keller (sax.) / Ignaz Dinné (sax.) / Vladimir Karparov (sax. ). The interplay and versatility of the musical repertoire of these musicians is definitely in for more ...

Trionauts is supported by the music promotion in the area Jazz, Household 2018 / Senate Department for Culture and Europe Berlin
